Decimal vs binary

The same amount of data in both prefix systems. Decimal (SI) steps are ×1000; binary (IEC) steps are ×1024.

How it works

Decimal (SI) prefixes multiply by 1000 per step: kB, MB, GB, TB, PB. Binary (IEC) prefixes multiply by 1024: KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB. One byte is 8 bits. The converter uses exact fractions, so results such as 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes are exact.

Common conversions

  • 1 KiB = 1,024 B · 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B · 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 B
  • 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B ≈ 931.32 GiB ≈ 0.909 TiB
  • 1 byte = 8 bits, so 1 MB = 8 Mbit and 1 GB = 8,000 Mbit

Frequently asked questions

Why does my new 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?

The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (decimal terabyte). Many operating systems divide by 1024³ and label the result “GB” although it is really GiB: 10¹² / 1024³ ≈ 931.32 GiB. Nothing is missing.

Is KB 1000 or 1024 bytes?

Strictly, kB (lowercase k) is 1000 bytes and KiB is 1024 bytes. “KB” with a capital K is commonly used for 1024 bytes in older software; this converter treats KB as the decimal kilobyte and offers KiB for 1024.

What about bits?

Bits (b) are used for network speeds and memory chips; bytes (B) for files and storage. 1 B = 8 b, so 1 MB = 8 Mbit.
