How it works

Frequency prefixes are decimal (SI): each step from Hz to kHz, MHz, GHz and THz is a factor of 1000. The clock period is the time of one cycle, 1 / frequency.

Frequency and clock period

1 kHz = 1,000 Hz, 1 MHz = 1,000 kHz, 1 GHz = 1,000 MHz, 1 THz = 1,000 GHz. The period of one cycle is T = 1 / f: 1 GHz ↔ 1 ns, 4 GHz ↔ 0.25 ns.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher GHz always faster?

Only within the same processor design. Performance also depends on how much work each cycle does, the number of cores, caches and memory, so GHz alone does not compare different CPUs.

What is the clock period?

The duration of one clock cycle: 1 divided by the frequency. A 4 GHz clock has a period of 0.25 nanoseconds.

Do frequency units use 1024 like memory sizes?

No. Frequency always uses decimal prefixes: 1 GHz = 1000 MHz = 1,000,000,000 Hz.
